Notes & Reviews:

"Der Tod Jesu" numbers among the masterpieces of Georg Philipp Telemann's old age. Never achieving the fame of Carl Heinrich Graun's oratorio to the very same text, it is entirely possible that their simultaneous competition was a deliberate competition between old age and youth. The score is characterized by its emotional depth, directness of expression and marvelous musical tone-painting. Soloists, chorus and orchestra all turn in remarkably polished performances.
