Notes & Reviews:

It was the remarkable musician Hans von Bulow who was first to conduct a Beethoven Quartet with full string orchestra when he programmed the "Great Fugue" in 1882. The practice has been repeated by Mahler, Weingartner, Toscanini, Furtwangler, Edwin Fischer, Boult, Mitropoulos, and now Andre Previn, who uses the Dimitri Mitropoulos edition for this performance. The VPO strings are excellent, providing impassioned, muscular performances, and DG's sound is first-rate.
