Notes & Reviews:

"...Hers [Renee Fleming's] is a fabulous voice, velvety and voluptuous, and the way she sculpts and floats phrases can only be marvelled at. Her coloratura is effortlessly agile and aerated in 'Merci jeunes amies'...but the real highlight is the inspired juxtaposition of her glorious swooning 'Ah, Je veux vivre' from Gounod's 'Romeo et Juliette' wih the...darkly ominous and agitated 'Come in quest'ora bruna' from 'Simon Boccanegra'." *****, Wrathall, BBC

American Record Guide, March/April 2016
A fantastic and fascinating program. The Emerson Quartet plays Berg's Lyric Suite with great clarity. I love this music; it's so alive and colorful. Deeply programmatic and personal, the piece chronicles the affair between Berg and Hanna Fuchs-Robettin. The last movement can be considered a "song without words"; a "secret setting of Stefan George's translation of 'De profundis clamavi' from Baudelair's Les Fleurs Du Ma", as the notes state. This program presents the six movements of the suite followed by a repetition of the last movement - here a song with words. Fleming is terrific and we still get the legato and warmth we expect from her, even in the rhythmically intense climax.

Notes & Reviews:

Some will tell you less is more, but this disc will have none of that, offering only more and more, more great arias, more touching drama, more beautiful melodies and more radiant singing from Renee Fleming. Far from a mere collection of showpieces, all the arias in this collection seem to have been chosen for a certain rapt, prayerful quality, each containing a character's secret hopes or fears, whether it is Puccini's Butterfly dreaming of impossible happiness, Catalani's Wally almost blissfully resigning herself to a sad fate, or Bellini's Norma praying to the moon for peace. Fleming, well beyond making wonderful music in these moments, seems to capture their inner spirits in a way that is both passionate and humane. Sir Charles Mackerras' accompaniments are sensitive and superbly detailed and, if you like the glamour shots of La Fleming on the cover there are more of those on the inside, too.
