Notes & Reviews:

Erich Kleiber, whose recording of Beethoven's Fifth created the gold standard for a quarter of a century, was a conductor whose approach to this titan of a composer was both volcanic and effortlessly graceful. Hans Pfitzner, whose version of Beethoven's Fourth with the same orchestra shares this disc, employs, by contrast, much more portamento. This is a wonderful study in contrasting but valid conducting styles with beautiful restorations by David Lennick.
