Notes & Reviews:

"The Symphony is about the most complete musical picture of an American circus that has ever been made. There is everything in it - military band music, waltzes, sentimental ditties, a Red Army song, a fugue, eccentric dancing - every kind of joke, acrobatic turn, patriotic reference and glamorous monstrosity." This is what Virgil Thomson wrote after the premiere of George Antheil's "Symphony No. 4". His 5th Symphony forms a contrast to it, as its subtitle, Joyous, already indicates.
