Notes & Reviews:

Here is a welcome return to the catalog, in a new 2005 remastering, of one of Symposium's most important issues. Arthur Nikisch (1855-1922) was born in Hungary, where his father was a bookkeeper. Entering Vienna Conservatory at age 11, he was conducting by 17 and director of the Leipzig Opera Orchestra by age 25. By the early part of the new century he was touring extensively throughout Europe and the United States, and we must remember that the Beethoven 'Symphony No.5' represented the first time a complete symphony was recorded by a major conductor. Once one's years have adjusted to the dated technology o these recordings, the listening experience is remarkable, like a journey back in a time machine. The notes for this issue, as is usual for Symposium, are exhaustive and scholarly, with analyses not only of the conductor's art but of the technical considerations involved in the remastering.
