Belgian by birth, French by choice, a gifted pianist and organist, Cesar Franck is remembered chiefly for a handful of outstanding symphonic, chamber and instrumental works. During the last thirty years of his life he wrote a masterful series of large scale organ works of which the "Prelude, fugue et variation" (1862) is the best known. Volume Two of this series is due out in April, 2001.
