Indonesia -- Wayang Golek: The Sound & Celebration of Sundanese Puppet Theater is a comprehensive six-CD set of music taken from traditional Indonesian entertainment. This music is taken from a wayang golek, which is a puppet show traditionally shown to celebrate life-cycle events or other community occasions in West Java, Indonesia. A variety of unique instruments are used for this, including a gamelan, flutes, drums, gongs, fiddles, xylophones, and the voices of the puppeteers. The album comes with the entire play transcribed and translated into English as well as in its native language. The performance comes courtesy of a 20-member performance troupe led by wayang golek puppeteer Asep Sunandar Sunarya who really make the story come alive with their incredible playing and expressive voices. The only issue is the sound quality, which is not terrible but still contains some crowd noise and occasional lapses in levels. Still, this is a very unique performance that deserves a listen by anyone curious to hear a rare and interesting art form being performed by one of its best practitioners. ~ Bradley Torreano
