Copland composed 'Billy the Kid' in France and America in 1938. It was written for the Ballet Caravan dance company and was first performed in Chicago, in an arrangement for two pianos. The 'Third Symphony' is Copland's most imposing orchestral work. This work is most recognized for its third movement which features the well-known 'Fanfare for the Common Man', It was commissioned by the Koussevitsky Foundation and dedicated to the memory of Natalie Koussevitsky.
