This recording contains highlights from the collection of 400 songs to the Virgin Mary which were commissioned, compiled and partially composed by King Alfonso X of Castile.
"Las Cantigas de Santa Maria" is a collection of over 400 songs about the Virgin Mary written between 1250 and 1280 under the direction of King Alfonso. The poems are in Galician (a language akin to Portuguese).
This pioneering recording by the American ensemble The Waverly Consort is now back in print after 25 years.
