Notes & Reviews:

Around 1800 Pleyel was regarded, next to Haydn and before Mozart, as Europe's most successful and most popular composer of instrumental music. His orchestral and chamber music was in circulation from Scandinavia to Southern Italy. Beginning in the 1820s, however, his fortunes began to fade: Beethoven set the norm, and Pleyel came to be regarded as a mere epigone of his esteemed mentor Haydn.
