Music lovers think of Wilhelm Furtwängler (1886-1954) as one of the greatest conductors of the 20th century who also composed, but he always thought of himself as a composer who also conducted, in the tradition of Beethoven, Brahms, Wagner and other past masters. In the summer of 1954 the 11-year-old Daniel Barenboim met Furtwängler in Salzburg, who called him a "phenomenon." Here Barenboim pays tribute to the legend by leading the American premiere of his Second Symphony.
