Album Summary
Conductor Ensemble ComposerNotes & Reviews:
"Stylistically there are more echoes of Tchaikovsky and Strauss - the Strauss of the Alpine Symphony, that is: grand, spacious, sweeping and not a little over-inflated... Daniel Barenboim conducts an impassioned, highly polished performance - a fitting tribute to the man whose warm praise helped establish Barenboim as a pianist and whose conducting continues to inspire him today, nearly half a century after Furtwanger's death." ***** -Johnson, BBC
Music lovers think of Wilhelm Furtwängler (1886-1954) as one of the greatest conductors of the 20th century who also composed, but he always thought of himself as a composer who also conducted, in the tradition of Beethoven, Brahms, Wagner and other past masters. In the summer of 1954 the 11-year-old Daniel Barenboim met Furtwängler in Salzburg, who called him a "phenomenon." Here Barenboim pays tribute to the legend by leading the American premiere of his Second Symphony.
