Spohr: String Quintets no 5 and 6 / Papp, Haydn Quartet

Notes & Reviews:

The 'Quintet No. 5' followed upon the tragic death of Spohr's daughter Therese at the age of nineteen. The initial movements are dark and sombre in mood, but by the end the atmosphere becomes more carefree. The 'Quintet No. 6' was composed in early 1845 and was one of a series of instrumental pieces he wrote following the composition of his last opera 'Die Kreuzfahrer.
