Notes & Reviews:

E.T.A. Hoffmann is rightly regarded as one of the greatest writers of the German romantic era but not as one of its major composers. Nevertheless, this trained jurist and later Prussian supereme court justice made repeated attempts to earn his living as a composer and conductor because of his firm conviction that music was the most romantic and thus the highest of all the arts.
