Notes & Reviews:
In Italy it was difficult to be a contemporary of Rossini, who satisfied public taste so well that Carlo Soliva, who was almost exactly his same age, never really had a chance, though his talent often rivaled that of Rossini. Since Soliva could make little headway in Italy, he went elsewhere. In 1821 he went to Warsaw, where he built up the opera and became the young Chopin's mentor. BBC Music Magazine
... Carlo Soliva... On this evidence of an impressive performance of his fourth opera... he can be judged one of the more tantalising might-have-beens of 19th-century Italian opera. ... the performance... is strongly guided, delivered by fresh, stylish, technically secure young singers (among whom the tenor Carlo Vincenzo Allemano, soprano Elisabetta Scano and mezzo Patricia Spence stand out), and based on solid choral and orchestral support.
