Notes & Reviews:

In 1892, after more than a decade in which he wrote nothing for solo piano, Brahms penned the piano pieces of Op. 116, 118 and 119. Whether he chose to call them intermezzos, capriccios or ballades, they have all taken their place at the very peak of the literature for piano. They are compositions of quite extraordinary maturity, sometimes reaching out to the frontiers of Impressionism.
