Notes & Reviews:

Canada's superb string ensemble Les Violons du Roy ("The King's Fiddles"), led by Bernard Labadie, is joined by the stellar German soprano Dorothea Roschmann and the luminous mezzo Catherine Robbin, in performances which are guaranteed to leave you spellbound. Vivaldi's sparsely-scored Stabat Mater creates an extraordinary sense of spirituality and profound sadness. Setting the lyrical, plaintive tone in Italian religious music for decades to come, Pergolesi's introspective version of the same text (for two solo voices) was evidently the fruit of a commission; the composer's early death sparked its posthumous popularity across eighteenth-century Europe where it became the most frequently printed single work of music.
