Notes & Reviews:

The first of Karlowiczs six symphonic poems, Returning Waves, established the melancholy tone characteristic of much of his mature work. It consists of an introduction and four main sections, including a waltz of hedonistic abandon with clear echoes of Richard Strauss. A Sorrowful Tale (1908) is an intense and often dissonant portrayal of a suicidal state of mind, though the subtitle Preludes to Eternity hint at the consolation of Nirvana already expressed in the composers Eternal Songs. Mieczyslaw Karlowiczs compositions reflect his admiration for the music of Bruckner, Grieg, Richard Strauss and Tchaikovsky and are characterized by late-romantic sumptuousness. a must-hear experience for any admirer of late Romanticism. - BBC Music Magazine Pick of the Month
