Notes & Reviews:

Balakirev occupies a key position in Russian musical history. He was chiefly known as the leader of the Mighty Handful. He was largely self-taught and disliked traditional musical methods. His influence helped to create a strong identity for Russian music which it had not enjoyed before. These recordings contribute a great deal to spreading familiarity with major orchestral works by a composer whose reputation rests more on his influence, especially in his own day, on other Russian composers than on his own output. This disc, conducted by Vassily Sinaisky, features the exceptional Howard Shelley who has enjoyed many successes. It is a warm and inventive score and has the benefit of sumptuous Chandos recording. - Classic FM Magazine
