Out of the ashes of Plexorjet, the previous longstanding unit of Atlanta brothers Donald and Gill Durant, emerged -- with the addition of yet another sibling, Seth Durant -- the trio Rizzudo and this, the group's self-titled, primarily instrumental debut album, a dark, sexy, and utterly beautiful piece of art rock. It is, indeed, a thing to behold. Even with the slight makeup of the band, the brothers manage to build magnificent, massive cathedrals of sound that tilt at odd angles, tower over onlookers, and cast intense and imposing, though breathtaking, shadows. The music bears a similarity in this way to the best recordings of King Crimson, and there is at times a mathematical complexity to the songs. But the Durants never allow intellect to override emotion, nor do they ever allow their compositions -- lean but luxurious -- to get away from them. Rizzudo deserves to be -- perhaps even demands to be -- taken as a whole (at a quick 21 minutes, it roars past the first spin almost before you can catch your breath), and in some ways it seems to diminish the achievement of such a singular work to point out particular pinnacles. Nevertheless, special mention goes to the thrilling stop-and-start momentum of "FOB," the densely woven menace of "Eeoww," and the Roland and Moog-driven "17th Street," which is just plain, gloriously strange. ~ Stanton Swihart
