Notes & Reviews:

Beethoven composed his only opera, Fidelio, while at the height of his creative powers. This collection of highlights (from Naxos 8660070-71) includes the Prisoners Chorus (an ode to freedom sung by a chorus of political prisoners), Florestans hallucinating vision of Lenore come as an Angel to rescue him (Gott! Welch Dunkel hier!), and the melodramatic Finale to Act II in which the rescue .finally takes place. Naxos strikes gold again with this superbly cast Fidelio Gramophone
