Notes & Reviews:

Two memorable recent performances from the London Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Paavo Berglund form the next release on the Orchestras own CD label. These acclaimed performances of Sibelius Second and Seventh Symphonies, recorded live at the Royal Festival Hall in 2003 and 2005, are full of searing excitement, warmth and power - complementing and fittingly extending Berglunds discography of music by Sibelius, which has profiled his relationship with some of the worlds greatest orchestras. The disc (recorded and mastered in surround SACD 4.0) is the first on the Orchestras new label to feature Berglund, and also Sibelius a composer with whose music the Orchestra has enjoyed a lifelong association.

"Having edited Hansen's critical edition of the Seventh, Paavo Berglund must know the score better than anyone. His 2003 live recording from London is wonderfully granitic in conception... So powerful a reading will nevertheless be de rigueur for Sibelians who prefer their string polyphony gaunt and unsweetened. One word of warning though: Berglund at times quite forgets himself, singing along and shouting encouragement in best Beecham style, overlaying awesome climaxes with alarming vocalizations. But this late engagement with a much-loved work engenders a realization of overwhelming force." -1001 Classical Recordings You Must Hear Before You Die
