Notes & Reviews:

LPO is pleased to present a disc of remarkable recently-discovered performances conducted by its founder Sir Thomas Beecham. Works by Sibelius (the first ever recording of The Tempest), Handel and Mozart were recorded live at the 1934 Leeds Festival, just two years after the Orchestras founding. These are featured alongside studio recordings of Mozarts Symphony 35 and Chabriers Rhapsody, Espaa, recorded at Abbey Road studios in 1938 and 1939 respectively. Recordings of staggering quality given their historic timing expose a London Philharmonic Orchestra and Choir in spirited and virtuosic form under Beechams baton. The quality of these previously unreleased recordings made just two years after the founding of the Orchestra is remarkable, said Timothy Walker, Artistic Director and Chief Executive of the London Philharmonic Orchestra. What we present in this disc is not only of huge historical interest, but also of great value musically vigorous and natural musicianship from whom Beecham considered the finest musicians in London in the 1930s, and with whom he formed his new London Philharmonic Orchestra.
