Notes & Reviews:

Ondine releases the world-premiere recordings of Einojuhani Rautavaaras Book of Visions, Adagio celeste and the revised version of his Symphony No. 1. Rautavaaras Symphony No. 1 (1956/1988/2003) was originally in four movements. The 1998 revised version has an unusual two-movement form consisting of a long, serious opening movement and a short, fast and ironic scherzo. In 2003 Rautavaara included a third movement between the opening movement and the scherzo, in the manner of Shostakovich and, to a lesser extent, Prokofiev.

Penguin Guide
The performances throughout are superbly played by this fine orchestra and, whether using two or four speakers, the sound is richly opulent, and in the demonstration bracket for its superb recording of the strings.
