The production of a new Ring at the Bayreuth Festival is an event that takes place every six years. Bayreuth recordings of the complete cycle are rare and this is only the third official audio recording and the second filmed version. This recording, originally released in 1993 and 1994, is one of the all-time highlights of the Teldec catalogue. In a few years it has become one of a small number of reference recordings of the cycle. I am more than ever impressed by Barenboims exciting, excitable conducting. His ability to integrate massive dramatic peaks within the symphonic span of Wagners long action-packed acts, his evident love of Wagners orchestrations and his deeply felt response to Wagners most profound utterances make this the most compelling of modern recorded Rings. - BBC Music Magazine A golden year indeed for my reviewing activity.
