We have here many different kinds of ensemble, starting with the elaborate formality of the duet from Rossinis Bianca e Falliero and concluding with the emotionally charged nonet from Donizettis Lassedio di Calais. Between these is a specially chosen selection of pieces, which shows that this was indeed the great century of ensemble writing. The CD booklet contains an introduction in English, French, German and Italian by Opera Raras Artistic Director Patric Schmid and comprehensive notes on each of the tracks by the distinguished critic and Assistant Editor of Opera, Erica Jeal.
