This release celebrates the 80th birthday of the distinguished Danish cellist Erling Blöndal Bengtsson. The recording provides a varied musical portrait of this renowned performer.

The pieces with piano are studio recordings. The Schubert is technically impeccable, even though cellist and pianist are not always on the same precise wavelength. The encores are also lovely, alternating slow and fast pieces, from a Corelli Adagio to a really wild Rondo by Weber. Then we have the slow movement of Chopin's sonata followed by a cute Waltz from Prokofieff's Music for Children. We end with the animals: Saint- Saens's Swan and Rimsky-Korsakoff's Bumblebee. These are all impressive on the part of the cellist, but why there is so little communication between the players is hard to figure. Still, it is a fine tribute to a fine cellist.
