Ensembles ComposersNotes & Reviews:
This is the first volume in a series planned by Opus Kura to release all the published recordings of the Cortot-Thibaud-Casals Trio.
American Record Guide, January/February 2013
These 1926-28 recordings were staples of the early Victor catalog and have been reissued many times since. They are touchstone performances: great musicians caught at the peak of their careers in the very early days of electric recording. The late-romantic manner of playing is starkly different than what one is accustomed to: not simply portamento and free tempos, but ensemble playing that is more conversation- like than ensemble-like. And what conversationalists! The unfiltered sound in this Japanese reissue will appeal to purists willing to tolerate a bit of surface noise in exchange for more presence - the original discs were remarkably good for the era. I wish it were as easy to reproduce the deluxe 1920s packaging Victor created for these once-costly items.
