American Record Guide, May/June 2013
Paul Dean is the Artistic Director of the Australian National Academy of Music in Melbourne, and pianist Stephen Emmerson is a long-time professor at the Queensland Conservatorium in Brisbane. Here they team up for a recital of standard romantic literature for clarinet and piano: the Brahms Sonatas, Op. 120 and the Schumann Fantasy Pieces, Op. 73. The performances are very spirited and emotionally involved, and several moments are truly magical. Dean offers a clear timbre, colorful phrasing, and an exquisite soft volume.
