American Record Guide, July/August 2013
If you like the choral music of Finland, boy have you come to the right place. Singing is one of the forces that held the region together in its formative years, and these are the composers whose music gave voice to the nationalist yearnings of an entire people. As these sailing songs, lullabies, love poems, laments, odes to nature, and tales from the epic Kalevala pass by, it's really the soul of a nation that's placed on display. The music is hopeful, too. So this is music of genuine humanity. The program brings many rewards. Alba, who share the stories of these seminal composers and their music in loving detail. (They translate it all into English, too.)
