Notes & Reviews:

The Budapest Quartet may have been founded by four members of the Budapest Orchestra in 1917, but by the time these recordings were made, the only original member was violist Ipolyi. Despite jokes made about the group's changing membership over the years, the Budapest Quartet is remembered as one of the great ensembles of its time. This performance might be short on repeats due to recording methods of the time, but it scores mightily in style, architecture, beauty of tone and seriousness of purpose.
