Notes & Reviews:
Russian expatriate pianist and composer Nikolai Medtner is largely forgotten today except by a growing number of listeners who have developed a true cult-following for the historic recordings of his own music, and for his late-Romantic music, especially the Piano Concertos. The conservative Medtner found the progressive atmosphere of the time unrewarding, and with the enthusiastic reception he had met in England, settled there in 1936. Though living well into the 20th century, his music looks back to the late 19th century in its rich, Romantic textures and folk-like melodies all heard in this comprehensive collection.
