Notes & Reviews:
The titular role, written for soprano castrato Caffarelli, is taken on by Paula Rasmussen in this acclaimed 2000 production from the Semperoper, Dresden, stage directed by Michael Hampe. Superbly accompanied by Les Talens Lyriques under the baton of Christophe Rousset, this is an elegant and charming production with an outstanding cast.
"...Hampe's 'Serse' was taped in June 2000 at the Semper Opera House in Dresden... Above all, Hampe has a superb cast of singers. Rasmussen, Hallenberg, and Bardon manage to surmount the perils of gender-transfer, projecting in turn an immature tyrant, a befuddled young lover, and a quite masculine swaggerer... A lot of credit, too, should go to Rousset, who directs with exactly the energy and stylish flair one would expect of him - and is probably responsible to considerable extent for the fine embellishments the singers manage..." -A.R.G.
I find this a successful Serse... It's definitely one of the better Handel productions that have been committed to DVD...
Serse is full of wonderful music, and it's Paula Rasmussen, as Serse, who shines in this performance. She stands out with both a wonderful voice, and an attractive stage presence. During the performances filmed, she gets applause several times after her numbers, showing that the audience in Dresden fell under her charm as well. Sandrine Piau is also excellent with some wonderful arias, and the rest of the cast is fine. The small orchestra - it looks to be about twenty musicians at most - is admirable, providing a clean, crisp sound.
