Notes & Reviews:

"Talk about a sense of occasion! This was the final concert of Leipzig's 2005 Bach Festival, scheduled as part of Maestro Blomstedt's farewell season at the head of the Gewandhaus. The Mass was performed (cue the goosebumps) at the Thomaskirche in JS's very own organ loft, and the results are anything but routine... While modern instruments are used, the fiddles are split, vibrato is minimal, textures are crystal-clear, and tempos move smartly as the authenticists suggest they should... The period touches are all to the good, I have to say, because the antiquemeisters have spoiled me in the B minor, where the likes of Klemperer, Scherchen, and Jochum sound positively elephantine after a generation's worth of gut strings and snappy pacing. The musicologists have done their work. Too many cobwebs have been blown off. We can never go back. What we get here, though, is the best of both worlds. This is one of the world's great orchestras, after all... and the soloists are superb - as expressive as any foursome I've ever heard scale these daunting heights... If you love Bach, run, don't walk." -A.R.G.
