Notes & Reviews:

"This concert from November 2005 commemorates the reopening of the Dresden Frauenkirche, an important baroque church that was destroyed in World War II. Taken as an aural experience, this is quite a fine performance. The soloists are all terrific, the chorus is large and powerful, and the orchestra under Luisi plays very well. The music actually sounds better than I would have guessed from seeing the interior of the church. The orchestra plays beneath a very high dime, and the chorus is quite in the distance, so I would have guessed we would hear problems of reverberation and ensemble, but the engineers have done a wonderful job at making everything very clear. Tempos are well chosen (except for an impossibly fast 'Pleni sunt coeli'), and Luisi is just as effective in contemplative moments (a wonderful 'Et incarnatus') as in the exhilarating ones, like the conclusion of the Glorious.
