Isaac Stern In Recital [DVD]

Notes & Reviews:

"This is a black-and-white video with clean, high-fidelity monaural sound from a Canadian television broadcast of February 12, 1967. Stern performs with Alexander Zakin, his usual accompanist at that time. The program opens with Schubert's Violin Sonatina in G, written when he was still quite young. Bach's Chaconne for solo violin is next, and Stern gives a tasteful reading. Here, I found the video helpful, as I found it instructive to observe Stern's bowings. Mozart's adagio in E, K 261 follows, and then there is his Rondo in C. The program closes with Brahm's Scherzo form the FAE Sonata. Stern is in fine form all the time, though I have always found Zakin insufficiently assertive. Many of Stern's later recordings with better-known pianists are more satisfying; however his technique was beginning to deteriorate. This video captures Stern in his prime." -Magil
