Performers Conductor Ensembles Composer

Notes & Reviews:

This film sees the world première video recording of Penderecki's first opera The Devils of Loudun, filmed shortly after its world première in 1969 at the Hamburg State Opera. This film adaptation, recorded in the same year shortly after the première, reunified the original cast including the wonderful Tatiana Troyanos in "a performance that radiates competence and commitment" (Gramophone). The plot, based on the book by Aldous Huxley, explores subjects including sexuality, religion, fanaticism and justice in a deep and sometimes disturbing series of powerful scenes. It is no surprise therefore that film director William Friedkin also chose to use the music in his film The Exorcist.
