Notes & Reviews:

While Berlioz based his 'La Damnation de Faust' (1846) on the seminal work of Goethe, Ferrucio Busoni went back to the earlier German puppet plays as the source for his 'Doktor Faust' (1924). The fundamental theme remains - man's unquenchable thirst for knowledge, the price for which is his soul. Busoni's opera was written three-quarters of a century later than the more commonly known version by Berlioz, and although they both use many of the same plot elements Busoni's 'Doktor' has a much more twentieth-century viewpoint and a modern sound worlds away from Berlioz's nineteenth-century romanticism. 'Doktor Faust' is commonly seen as the magnificently all-involving summa of this brilliant, eccentric, but neglected composer.
