Notes & Reviews:

Here is Giacomo Puccini’s immortal opera in a high budget feature-film version - not a staged operatic production - directed by Academy Award nominee Robert Dornhelm, starring the opera world’s "dream team", soprano Anna Netrebko and tenor Rolando Villazón.

"He sounds relaxed and lyrical as the young poet. His high notes in the climaxes are vibrant and attacked cleanly." (AP)

"Netrebko sings the feeling and imagination and Villazón is an inspired, golden-voiced Rodolfo." - GRAMOPHONE

"an extraordinary theatrical opera film" - CLASSIC FM MAGAZINE

"the exuberant, world-class performers blast you away... the screen fizzes with charismatic interplay and fun... exquisite music." - METRO

"a film starry and sumptuous" - THE TIMES

"Breathtakingly dramatic and emotional... full to the brim with some of the best vocal talents of today" - OPERA NOW MAGAZINE

Giacomo Puccini's immortal opera in a high budget feature-film version directed by Academy Award nominee Robert Dornhelm, stars opera's 'Golden Couple,' Rolando Villazón and Anna Netrebko as the protagonists, Rodolfo and Mimi. The chemistry between them is electric, unrivalled in the theatre today. Russian soprano Anna Netrebko is not only beautiful but has a marvelous voice and technique; Mexican tenor Rolando Villazón, has a wonderful voice and an incredible charisma. The excellent bonus features include fascinating interviews with all the key performers and the director, who confirms that he not only wanted to remain steadfastly faithful to Puccini's design but also document two of the leading singers of the modern age rather than embarking on a "trendy" contemporary recreation.

Notes & Reviews:

Run Time: 109 min.
Region: 1
Picture Format: NTSC, 16:9, Color

When I saw this movie in early January 2010, as presented by my local public television station, I was very disappointed in the over-all quality of the film. The sound was somewhat scratchy; the picture was very dark in places, resulting in some details being missed. Worst of all, the sound and picture were out of sync, making it impossible for me to watch. I let the movie run while I ignored the screen and listened to one of my favorite operas.
