Notes & Reviews:

This stylized production by Lorenzo Mariani, features reduced decor but magnificent rococo costumes. The "violet-perfumed murderess" is performed by mezzo-soprano Marianne Cornetti, one of the most in-demand representatives of her vocal category. Opposite her, in the role of Adriana, is a soprano who as a Verdi and verismo specialist also appears regularly at all the major international opera houses, Micaela Carosi. The "cock-of-the-walk" role is sung by the world-class tenor Marcelo Alvarez. His timbre, velvety smooth yet robustly virile, is ideally suited to a vocal characterization of the idolized Maurizio. Conductor Renato Palumbo is very much at home with Cilea's operatic masterpiece, since the Italian Romantic and verismo periods are at the core of his extensive repertoire. A BLU-RAY version of this performance is available as AHM 101498.

I have viewed the DVD of "Adriana Lecouvreur" and I found it quite well done, on the whole. The main singers were quite competent. I especially liked the lead tenor (Maurizio - Marcelo Alvarez), Adriana (Micaela Carosi), Michonnet (Alfonso Antoniozzi) and the Abbe (Luca Casalin). They all had well focused intonation without excessive vibrato and had good quality. I thought that Alvarez, with his ringing Italian tenor voice, was exceptionally good in his role. I was somewhat less pleased with the princess (Marianne Cornetti), whose vibrato was somewhat wider and not always centered right on the actual note. However, she seemed to improve as the Opera proceeded. If you don't insist on Pavarotti, this recording will be a fine addition to one's Opera collection. Ted Wilks
