Notes & Reviews:
This 2004 production of Verdi's La Traviata celebrates the resurrection of the legendary Teatro La Fenice, which had been completely destroyed by a fire in 1996. Led by star conductor Lorin Maazel, a brilliant cast replicates the opera's 1853 premiere, giving audiences the opportunity to experience the work as it was first heard in that venue. Furthering this air of authenticity, the production utilizes the original score from the La Fenice archives. With soprano Patrizia Ciofi in the title role, tenor Roberto Sacca as her lover and baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky as his father, this live recording features highly eminent singers who are at home in opera houses throughout the world. The close-ups and multi-perspective filming underline the singers' outstanding acting ability and leave the impression of a film rather than stage action.
Roberto Saccà is a likeable Alfredo. He does not have the largest of tenor voices but he has style and lightness when needed and several good Alfredos in the past have been lyrical singers, notably Cesare Valletti and Alfredo Kraus. Having seen Saccà live in the role some years ago I had high expectations and he didn't let me down.
Lorin Maazel conducts a bit harshly and with few new insights, but orchestra and chorus respond handsomely. Subtitles are in all major European languages, and both sound and picture are first rate. As I said, it is invaluable for the edition used and Ciofi is quite wonderful...
