Notes & Reviews:
"Ancient myth meets Star Wars. This is a worthy and compelling, glittering version of a sublime work" (International Herald Tribune). Monumental Operas deserve epochal staging. And Les Troyens by Berlioz is just such a work. This grand opera, complete with ballets, large choruses & orchestral set pieces, is given the full treatment by famous Catalan theatre group La Fura dels baus. Recorded at Valencia's Palau de les Arts under the baton of the great Valery Gergiev, featuring Danielle Barcellona as "Dido" this production is "such a feast for the eyes, a veritable orgy of optical opulence" that displays "this artists groups sheer inexhaustible fund of imagination and creativeness" (Das opernglas).
this is a compelling performance of the score, robustly conducted. Lance Ryan is a strong vocal presence ... Gabriele Viviani is good ... Berlioz' burly choruses and spectacles ... are played with power and enthusiasm ... It is our polite suggestion that you listen to this performance.
Coproduced with the Mariinsky Theatre and Polish National Opera, the spectacle was documented at the Palau de les Arts, Valencia, on November 9, 2009, and it is musically a thrilling occasion on many counts. Valery Gergiev, a longtime Berlioz champion but a recent recruit to Les Troyens, is in his element, catching the rough, archaic undercurrents of the score as surely as he does its rapturous refinements. Orchestra and chorus are superb.
... In The Trojans we once more have the brilliant 3D projection effects, some outrageous costumes, along with vivid imaginative effects. Surprisingly, the Trojan Horse doesn't amount to much. Singers are up to their tasks, but I cannot imagine anyone interested in this opera preferring this to the Met Levine production which in its new remastering sounds better than ever and as a performance surely is more what Berlioz intended - and surely is better sung.
