Notes & Reviews:
Klaus Tennstedt, a renowned Mahlerian, conducted this live performance at the Royal Festival Hall a year after stepping down as the LPO's Principal Conductor. Issued here for the first time on DVD, this live performance was hailed as 'legendary' by Gramophone writer, Michael McManus. Highly personal and passionate, McManus says, "the phenomenon that was Tennstedt in concert will never, can never, be recreated."
Klaus Tennstedt was a great Mahler conductor and this DVD is a splendid visual record of him directing a blazing performance of the Fifth Symphony.
Tennstedt, looking a little bit fragile and dishevelled, inspires a performance of near hysterical proportions from his beloved London orchestra. Mahler's harrowing journey from darkness to light is compellingly conveyed in this fantastic performance.
