Notes & Reviews:
Released for the first time on DVD are rare studio performances of John Cranko's choreography in The Lady and The Fool and Pineapple Roll. Featuring performances from the stars of 1955, including David Blair, Svetlana Beriosva and Merle Park, this disc is a timeless treasure which at last has been digitized, preserving this material so that it can be loved for generations to come.
ICA Classics places us once more in its debt with two ballets by John Cranko that were filmed in 1959 by the BBC. And not only can we see these two early works illustrating the acclaim showered on the choreographer at the time, but we can also appreciate the talents of Charles Mackerras, who concocted these two scores, one using music from works by Verdi that were virtually unknown in the early 1950s, the other using music by Arthur Sullivan, whose music entered public domain in 1951... The stories told in these one-act ballets are simple to follow, the steps engaging, and the pathos of Lady and the Fool deeply touching. Svetlana Beriosova captures the elusive quality required but is touching in the love she offers Ronald Hynd as Moondog. Ray Powell's Bootface is deeply moving as he goes off alone at the end. And all this to scintillating Verdi.
It is wonderful to have these two masterpieces of balletomania easily available. At present this is the only version of either work on DVD. It may be for a ballet company in the future to revive one or both of these ballets but at present this is a splendid addition to the catalogues. It is not to be missed by ballet enthusiasts, G&S cognoscenti and lovers of obscure but delightful Verdi!
This is living (albeit recorded) ballet history and not to be missed by any lover of the art form. Grab it.
