Notes & Reviews:
New production of La Gioconda recorded at the renowned opera house in Barcelona. The staging was realized in cooperation with the Arena di Verona and successfully shown in the famous opera festival's 2005 program. This production features internationally acclaimed singers, as well as soloists & ballet dancers from the Gran Teatre del Liceu. Title role sung by American soprano Deborah Voigt, one of the most important dramatic sopranos in her generation. Polish contralto Ewa Podle appears as Gioconda's blind mother, delighting the audience with warmth & broad vocal range while convincingly conveying her character's suffering. Canadian tenor Richard Margison takes the role of the exiled nobleman Enzo & Italian baritone Carlo Guelfi sings the spy & agent provocateur Barnaba.
Deborah Voigt... have what it takes and it's a great thrill to hear her carry over the top of the choruses and the orchestra. Another great credit to the performance is Ewa Podles, familiar to Toronto audiences, whose sympathetic portrayal and mellifluous alto voice of the abused blind mother is simply heartbreaking... the conducting of Daniele Callegari is outstanding especially in the exquisitely choreographed, beautifully executed "Dance of the Hours."
this well staged performance by veteran Pier Luigi Pizzi, under the idiomatic and well-paced baton of Daniele Callegari and superbly caught for video by Tiziano Mancini, will not be bettered on film in the near future. Add a good chorus and corps de ballet and I suggest lovers of the work should not hesitate but add this set to their collection now.
La Gioconda is the clearest example of what might be called grand opera in the Italian if it were not just unprecedented and are consistent for a work of similar nature. In any case and despite being an unorthodox name, we point your character and wealth of spectacular contrasts, with rich choral scenes and even a ballet.
