Notes & Reviews:
Strehler was one of Europe's most celebrated theatre directors. In his Piccolo Teatro in Milan he created outstanding interpretations of Bertolt Brecht and William Shakespeare. As an opera director he worked at all the major international opera houses, most notably the Teatro alla Scala, Milan, where he was responsible for productions of Verdi's Simon Boccanegra (1971), Macbeth (1975) and in 1980 for Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro. This legendary production of Mozart's masterpiece is now available as a 2006 recording, featuring the wonderful Diana Damrau as Susanna and Ildebrando D'Arcangelo as Figaro.
Vocally it gets better, thanks to a brash and crystal Diana Damrau, who sang Susanna first and thrilling in the garden scene of the last act, or a musical Ildebrando D'Arcangelo Figaro, very in tune with your partner. Galante and resounding Count Pietro Spagnoli, of great phrasing, and compliant Countess Marcella Orsatti Talamanca, which replaced the indisposed Miriam Gauci and Coliseum debut in Milan. Perhaps it would have been better to wait Harteros, who played the Countess in the latest features, to make the DVD.
this film - a 2006 revival of Strehler's Le Nozze di Figaro from 1980 - is much more than a simple document of an important director's style. This is above all a heartfelt performance of a heartfelt masterpiece, and in the end Strehler's work is inseparable from the contributions of the conductor, designers and cast.
