Notes & Reviews:

The creative team that triumphed with the Théâtre du Châtelet production of Offenbach's La Belle Hélène, turned their talents to Platée in this Opéra de Paris staging. In the realm of the ancient gods, Mercury & Cithaeron persuade Jupiter he can cure his wife Juno's jealousy by setting up a mock marriage between himself & Plataea, an ugly but supremely self-confident marsh nymph who rules a realm of frogs. When Juno sees how ridiculous the situation is, they argue, her jealousy will vanish.

Platea is a transvestite character who gives life magnificently tenor Paul Agnew, who by then was consecrated as one of the great singers to the French repertoire (despite its Scottish origin). The staging by Laurent Pelly is certainly appropriate, building with the goal posts a picture of modernity timely and satirical caricature. The rest of the cast, chorus and orchestra operating at the highest level, under the command of a very good direction of Marc Minkowski. He said a classic.
