Notes & Reviews:
The First Complete Opera on 3D Blu-Ray!
Passion, jealousy and betrayal take center stage at London's Royal Opera House in a spectacular production of the world's most popular opera. Bizet's Carmen is packed with some of the best-loved and memorable music in all of opera. In this characteristically vivid and vibrant stage production by Francesca Zambello, beautifully filmed in 3D by Julian Napier, Seville is brought to life with ranks of soldiers, crowds of peasants, gypsies and bullfighters - as well as a magnificent horse, a donkey and even some chickens! This spectacular RealD and Royal Opera House production features a supremely talented cast, gripping drama and Bizet's energetic and passionate score. It is truly a musical event to remember! Carmen in 3D was premiered at the Santa Barbara Film Festival in February 2011, and this recording marks the world's first complete opera on 3D Blu-ray.
Carmen in 3D was shot using state-of-the-art 3D cameras during live performances at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. This was a first of its kind 3D production utilizing the same equipment used for many of today's blockbuster 3D feature films and live 3D sporting events

"I was hugely impressed by the exceptional performances turned in by Bryan Hymel as Don José, the soldier who foolishly falls head over heels for Carmen, and the beautiful soprano Maija Kovalevska as Micaëla, the smalltown girl who loves him; but it is Carmen herself who rightfully dominates the show. Watching Christine Rice in this role is an electrifying experience. She brings an astonishing emotional force to her performance, displaying a remarkable vocal range, and while she is a magnetic presence every minute she is on stage, a couple of individual sequences are particularly worthy of praise. The first is her introduction, in which she scandalously taunts and tempts the soldiers, and another powerful scene occurs at the end of Act 2, when she persuades the disgraced Don José to run away with her gang of bandits. The scene that really struck me, however, was the one in which Carmen turns over tarot cards to predict her future, and Napier's camera allows us to see Rice's eyes filling with tears as she learns of her tragic fate.... Carmen 3D as a whole is as exciting and satisfying a cultural experience as I've had in some time. To the uninitiated, the sound of a two-and-a-half hour opera might sound forbidding, but I was enthralled by the drama, and those hours flew by." -PhilOnFilm.comNotes & Reviews:
