Gades and Saura: Carmen / Vento, Gil, Mulero, Rodriguez [DVD]

Album Summary

>Bizet, Georges : Carmen, opera
Performers Ensemble Composer

Notes & Reviews:

Created by Antonio Gades in collaboration with Carlos Saura, this matchless production shows how the explosive power and intensity of feeling in traditional Spanish flamenco can bring vividly to life the sultry passion, earthy emotion, love and rivalry that is Carmen. Vanesa Vento lives and breathes Carmen, emphasizing the many faces of this character, female, passionate and freedom fighter. But Carmen's gypsy wildness becomes her own downfall when she discards Don José's (Ángel Gil) love for that of the bullfighter (Jairo Rodríguez), as possessed by a piercing despair Don José kills her. - Filmed in High Definition at the Teatro Real, Madrid for the 75th anniversary celebration of Gades' birth, the Compañía Antonio Gades performs Carmen to perfection.

An Exquisite Look into Spanish Culture
Carmen, told through the spectacles of Antonia Gades and the Teatro Real Madrid, is a flamenco-and-Spanish-dance re-telling of the famed opera. It provides an interesting look at the culture of flamenco and Spanish dance, with the story being told through song, dance, and mime. There are also several interludes of folk-esque dances and songs for the rest of cast. Accompanying the film is a short documentary about the history of the work of art, and its effect on the dance world. If one were looking for a more balletic adaption of Carmen, I would recommend Petit's Carmen, or Alonso's Carmen. While this film provides an interesting look at flamenco culture, I personally enjoy the more balletic adaptions of this story, so I'd have to recommend the aforementioned ones.
