Notes & Reviews:
A student of Milhaud & Berio, Reich (b.1936) quickly developed a style all his own inspired by Baroque music, Bartók, Webern, Stravinsky, jazz, traditional music (especially African), & Hebrew cantillation. In this profile he looks back on the key stages of his 40 year long career. This film is about the artist & his music. We see him at work, with clips from performances & concerts in Le Havre, Tokyo, Rome, New York & Manchester.
this is a film that should not be missed ... Reich is visual as well as aural composer, film representations of his pieces are the best way to get the total experience. The balance between interview and performance is just right ...
